What is Robert Marc?
Robert Marc trained as an optician and opened his first boutique on Columbus Avenue in New York in 1981. That shop is still open.
The timing matters. In 1981 glasses were understood as a medical device, something you were prescribed rather than something you chose. Marc took the opposite view, put serious lenses in genuinely good frames, and made the case that eyewear belonged in fashion. The industry eventually agreed with him. He was inducted into the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2001, which is not a thing that used to happen to people who sell glasses.
He spent years working on eyewear collections for other fashion houses, including Calvin Klein and Fendi, before launching his own line, Robert Marc NYC, in 1999. So the brand you can try on at our counter is the work of someone who had already spent close to two decades looking at what worked on real faces across a counter of his own.
The hinge
Every house needs one thing it will not compromise on. For Robert Marc it is the hinge.
The signature is drawn from historical design and construction, and once you know it you cannot miss it: two lines and a dot, set into the temple. It appears across the collection and it functions as the brand mark, which is a quietly confident decision. There is no logo shouting from the temple arm. The identifying detail is a piece of hardware that has to be well made to look right.
In the current collection that hinge has been reworked with a flexible spring mechanism, so it keeps the look and adds the give that makes a frame comfortable at hour ten instead of hour two. That is a rare kind of update. Most brands change the appearance and leave the engineering alone. This one did the reverse.
Handcrafted in France and Japan
Robert Marc frames are handmade, and where they are made depends on what they are made of.
The Series 1 optical collection is handcrafted in France, built from Italian acetate, and carries the signature hinge. The current collection leans on Japan, using Japanese titanium and Japanese acetate. There is also a horn collection worked by a specialist factory in Germany.
Those are three of the four places on earth where the best frame work actually happens, and a brand that splits production across them is not chasing a cheaper invoice. It is going to whichever country does the material best. Japanese titanium is the clearest example. As Jeff Solorio, one of the new creative directors, put it, Japan is one of the few countries that can produce titanium at that level, because it spent the eighties and nineties perfecting the craft.

A new chapter, right on the anniversary
2026 is the forty-fifth year for Robert Marc, and the house is using it to reset.
The name has been shortened. Robert Marc NYC is now simply Robert Marc, a change made to reflect a more global outlook. Creative direction has passed to John Juniper and Jeff Solorio, the founders of DITA, who came in to refresh the icons and widen the brand reach. Their first collection is called Volume One: The Feeling Remains, and the title is doing real work. It is the spring-hinge collection, built in Japanese titanium and acetate and German horn, in classic mid-century, aviator and contemporary shapes.
The point of that name is that the house is being renewed rather than replaced. The hinge stayed. The restraint stayed. If you have worn Robert Marc for twenty years, this is not a brand you have to relearn.
Who Robert Marc is for
This is eyewear for the person who wants to look expensively dressed without looking like they are wearing a brand.
Robert Marc sits at the opposite end of the room from T Henri, the hypercar-inspired house we also carry, which is designed to be noticed. Robert Marc is designed to be correct. Clean shapes, considered color, and a signature that only other people who know the brand will catch. New York restraint, essentially, which travels perfectly well to Thousand Oaks.
It suits people who dress with good materials and no logos. It suits professionals who want one frame that works in a meeting, at dinner and on a Saturday.
